Our History
In 1982, a group of singers from several Newton County churches joined forces to perform the Christmas portion of George Fredric Handel's Messiah. This chorus was informally named The Newton County Community Chorus. A small orchestra was engaged and local soloists joined the chorus for this performance under the direction of Mr. Alan Parker. The event was highly successful, so it was repeated in 1983 with Mr. Dave Young conducting. Again, the performance received tremendous community support, and when a third performance was met with critical acclaim in 1984, a group approached Mr. Roger Waters to discuss the feasibility of formally establishing a community chorus that would present seasonal concerts. A steering committee was formed which resulted in the creation of The Covington Choral Guild. The original steering committee became the Board of Directors and became incorporated by the State of Georgia and gained 501(3)(c) status from the IRS as a non-profit organization. The Board appointed Mr. Alan Parker and Mr. Roger Waters as Co-Directors and Mrs. Joni Jones as accompanist. Within two years, the Board recognized that membership and support had grown to include both Newton and Rockdale counties and formally changed the organization's name to The Covington/Conyers Choral Guild, Inc. In 1991, Mr. Alan Parker moved to another area of the state and the Board appointed Mr. Waters as Director/Conductor of The Covington/Conyers Choral Guild and Mrs. Jones as Assistant Director/Accompanist.
Ever since, the Guild has performed major choral works for audiences both locally and throughout the eastern United States. Annual tours have showcased the Guild in Savannah, GA; Nashville, TN; Biloxi, MS; Charleston, SC; and more. For many years, the Guild performed during the Candlelight Christmas Season at Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC. Performances by special invitation include:
